Sicily Orange Sunrise flavor wins top honor in Santa Barbara
The winning flavor Sicily Orange Sunrise has been voted the best gelato flavor in the second stage of Gelato Festival America, which ended Sunday in Santa Barbara, CA. The win has gained Maurizio Melani of Véneta Gelato Italiano, Valencia, Spain, a place in the Finale of the 2018 Gelato Festival America. With the support of SIGEP and Carpigiani, the Gelato Festival America welcomed ten artisans from around the world to compete with their special flavors in Santa Barbara.
Melani describes his flavor, "The fantastic Sicilian Oranges become true stars of our new and fascinating Sicily Orange Sunrise which is exalted and enhanced with harmony from ample aromatic range of fresh aromatic mint and cardamom. Live a refreshing and exotic experience."
Several other awards were earned by the competitors: the Silver Award went to the flavor Mango Scented Genmaicha Tea Sorbet by Michele Brown of Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas, TX, and the Bronze Award went to the flavor Blood Orange by Robert Sigona of Gelotti Homemade Ice Cream and Italian Ice, Paterson, NJ.
A new competition at the Gelato Festival, the Gelato-to-Go Champion award is given to the artisan who sells the most pints to take home. And the Gelato-to-Go Champion was Maurizio Melani of Véneta Gelato Italiano, Valencia, Spain.
Special Mention Public Vote went to the flavor Shade of Rose by Salvatore Bonomo of Nonna Rosa, Sicily, Italy. Special Mention Technical Jury was awarded to the flavor Ode to Autumn by Noel Knecht of Colibri Gelato, San Clemente, CA.
Deciding the competition results was the combined vote of the jury of food journalists and that of the general public. Each category accounted for 50% of the vote. The awards were announced at La Cumbre Plaza at the close of the second stage of the Gelato Festival America.
There were several side competitions at the festival that really got the crowd going. For the second time in Gelato Festival history, 15 kids from the Santa Barbara area grilled the artisans on their motivations and methods of preparation, then tasted and voted on the best flavor. Kid’s Jury Award went to Spin Mlynarik of Black Market Gelato, North Hollywood, CA, for his Tropical Blast flavor.
Another entertaining competition was Stack It High, presented by PreGel America where artisans had 20 seconds to stack as many scoops onto a cup as possible. Robert Sigona of Gelotti Homeade Ice Cream, Paterson, NJ smashed the current world record with 14 scoops.
Speed cup, a competition presented by ISA, allowed the artisans to show off their speed and accuracy in producing cups of gelato. The winner was Bruno Couto de Matos of Frio Gustoso, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
People from all over California enjoyed the educational presentation in the Gelato Classroom. There were presentations from Carpigiani Gelato University, Whygelato.com teaching the history of gelato, Sogno Toscano's gastronomic gelato show, Speed Cup by Isa, phenomenal participation of kids to the Kids Jury, and a gelato eating contest! Recent students from Carpigiani’s Gelato University created fresh Strawberry, Pink Lemonade, and Watermelon Sorbetto that the public loved.
